Woodmen Valley Park in Colorado Springs

Woodmen Valley Park, Colorado Springs

The Modern Woodmen of America (a fraternal benefits organization, like the lodge system), opened a Sanatorium in this valley during the tuberculosis epidemic of the early 1900's. The web link has a remarkable photo of Blodgett Peak, not unlike the photo of the soccer field below. Tucked into the Woodmen Valley near Woodmen-Roberts Elementary School, this park has gorgeous views and never feels too crowded.

Location:
  • West of I-25. If you're coming from the east, take Woodmen Road to the right where it turns into Rockrimmon Drive. Park is across from the Villas of La Bellezza (relatively new homes). (Address: 2525 W. Woodmen Road). MAP to Woodmen Valley Park

Highlights:

  • Beautiful view of the Rampart Range
  • Separate structures for older and younger children
  • Relax in the shade under the picnic gazebo
  • Great for casual birthdays or playgroup gatherings
  • The large, open field is ideal for letting the kids run or laying down to enjoy a good book
  • Easy access up the hill to the trail that leads to Woodmen-Roberts Elementary
  • Bring the sand toys!

Be Aware:

  • Unfortunately, this park is sometimes the victim of night-time vandalism. So on rare occasions, watch out for a broken bottle (which is quickly cleaned up by the city)
  • Supervision needed when going on the trail; not great in some spots for younger kids
  • Drinking fountain not in operation
  • VERY windy on high wind days

Checklist:

  • Plenty of parking along Woodmen Road; have kids exit the car on the playground side - cars tend to go fast along this road
  • Play surface mostly sand with some rubber mats under swings
  • Port-A-Potty nearby, but you might want to bring your own wipes
  • Shade only under gazebo
  • Easy to supervise multiple children
  • One picnic table under gazebo, but lots of room to spread out on the field
  • Sand volleyball court and grassy field for lacrosse/baseball/soccer
  • Tennis courts nearby
